Creating a site

Overview

Creating a site is the first step to building out your directory. Once created, your site goes through a short provisioning process where the server is configured in the background. After that, your directory is live and accessible with free SSL included.

Creating your site

  1. From your dashboard, click Add new on the sites page
  2. Enter a name for your site
  3. Select a type (e.g. Directory, Job Board)
  4. Click Create

After clicking Create, you'll be taken through a setup wizard that uses AI to configure the core layout, pages, categories, and add sample listings for your site based on the type you selected. This is the fastest way to get a fully structured directory up and running.

If you'd prefer to build everything manually, click the skip the wizard link to go straight to the site edit page with a blank setup.

Your site is created with an Inactive status. This means it exists in your account but isn't live yet.

Activating your site

To make your site live, you need to activate it:

  1. Find your site on the sites list page
  2. Toggle the switch on the site card to activate it

While it's possible to activate your site at any time, you may find its unavailable for a minute or two after creation. That's because the server is configuring it in the background. This includes setting up your subdomain and provisioning a free SSL certificate.

Your site URL

Every site gets a free subdomain automatically based on its slug:

  • Format: your-site-slug.listable.directory
  • The slug is generated from your site name (e.g. "Pet Directory" becomes pet-directory)
  • Free SSL is included - your site is served over HTTPS by default

You can connect a custom domain later from the site settings.

Next steps

Once your site is live, you'll typically want to:

  1. Customise the theme - Choose colours and branding that match your project
  2. Add custom fields
  3. Add categories
  4. Add or import listings - best to do this after you've added your custom fields and categories, otherwise you'll need to loop back over them to add what's new/missing
  5. Configure blocks - Customise the homepage and detail page layouts
  6. Set up a custom domain (optional) - Connect your own domain name

Plan limits

Your plan determines how many active sites you can have at once. The sites list page shows your current usage. If you exceed your limit, you'll see a warning and will need to deactivate some sites or upgrade your plan.
