Menu
Build your navigation with links, dropdowns, and action buttons
Overview
The header menu appears at the top of every page in your directory. It provides navigation for visitors and can include action buttons that trigger features like contact forms or listing submissions.
You can add four types of menu items:
- Links - Standard navigation to pages or external URLs
- Standard buttons - Styled buttons that link to a URL
- Contact buttons - Open a contact form modal
- Submit Listing buttons - Open the listing submission form
Accessing menu settings
- Open the edit page of your directory
- Click
Settingsin the menu bar - Scroll to the Menu section
You'll see two tabs: Header and Footer. Each has its own set of menu items that you can configure independently.
Adding menu items
- Click

Menu item types explained
Link
Standard text links for navigation. They appear inline with your other menu items and blend into the header design.
How it appears: As clickable text in the header navigation bar.
When clicked: Navigates to the specified URL.
Use for:
- Internal pages (
/page/about,/page/privacy) - Category browsing (
/page/browse) - External resources
Button (Standard)
A visually prominent button that links to a URL. Buttons use your theme's primary color and stand out from regular links.
How it appears: As a styled, filled button in the header.
When clicked: Navigates to the specified URL.
Use for:
- Important calls-to-action
- Sign up or registration pages
- Promotional or featured content
Contact
A button that opens your directory's contact form in a modal overlay. Visitors can send you a message without leaving the page.
How it appears: As a styled button (same as standard button).
When clicked: Opens a modal with a contact form.
Form fields: Name, email, phone number, and message.
Where messages go: Sent directly to your account's primary email address. You must have a verified email to receive submissions.
No URL required: The contact form is built-in, so you don't need to configure a URL.
Submit Listing
A button that opens the listing submission drawer, allowing visitors to add new listings to your directory.
How it appears: As a styled button (same as standard button).
When clicked: Opens a slide-out drawer with the listing submission form.
Availability: This option only appears in the menu builder when the Submit Listing feature is enabled for your directory.
No URL required: The submission form is built-in.
How buttons appear on your site
Links and buttons render differently in the header:
| Type | Appearance | Styling |
|---|---|---|
| Link | Text link | Matches header text color |
| Button | Filled button | Uses theme primary/button color |
| Contact | Filled button | Uses theme primary/button color |
| Submit Listing | Filled button | Uses theme primary/button color |
Button colors are controlled by your theme settings. Go to Settings > Theme to customize your button colors.
Creating dropdown menus
Group related links under a parent item that expands on hover (desktop) or tap (mobile). There are two ways to create dropdowns:
Option 1: Add new child items
- Create a parent menu item with type Link
- Click the + button on that item
- Add child items underneath it
Option 2: Drag existing items
- Grab the drag handle on an existing menu item
- Drag it onto another item to nest it as a child
The parent item becomes a dropdown trigger. On desktop, hovering opens the dropdown. On mobile, tapping expands it.
Note: Button types (Contact, Submit Listing) cannot have child items and cannot be nested inside dropdowns.
Reordering menu items
Drag and drop to rearrange your menu:
- Grab the drag handle (two horizontal lines) on the left
- Drag up or down to reorder
- Drag onto another item to nest it as a child (creates a dropdown)
- Visual indicators show where the item will land
Editing and deleting items
To edit: Click the pencil icon, make changes, then click the checkmark to save or X to cancel.
To delete: Click the trash icon. The item is removed immediately.
Warning: Deleting a parent item removes all its children too.
Menu collapse behaviour
To prevent the header menu from colliding with your logo or becoming cluttered, menus with more than 4 items automatically collapse into a hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) on desktop.
This means:
- 4 items or fewer - Menu items display inline in the header
- More than 4 items - All items collapse into a hamburger menu
If you need more than 4 visible items, consider using dropdowns to group related links under a single parent item.
Mobile menu
On mobile devices, the header always collapses into a hamburger menu. Tapping it opens a full-screen menu overlay.
In the mobile menu:
- Links display in a vertical list
- Dropdowns expand/collapse on tap
- Buttons appear at the bottom, full-width
Default menu items
New directories are created with these menu items:
Header:
- Contact Us (Contact button)
Footer:
- Privacy Policy (
/page/privacy) - Terms of Service (
/page/terms)
You can modify or remove these default items at any time.
Footer menu
The footer menu works identically to the header but appears at the bottom of every page. Switch to the Footer tab in menu settings to configure it.
You can add buttons to the footer as well, though links are more common.
Feature dependencies
Some menu button types depend on other features being enabled:
Submit Listing button
Requires the Submit Listing feature to be enabled. This feature is disabled by default for new directories.
To enable it:
- Go to Submit Listing in your directory menu
- Toggle Enable submit listing on
- Configure your submission settings (approval mode, notifications, etc.)
- Now you can add Submit Listing buttons to your menu
If you disable Submit Listing later, any Submit Listing buttons in your menu will automatically be hidden from visitors.
Contact button
The contact form sends messages to your account email. Ensure:
- Your account email is verified
- You check your email (including spam folder) for submissions
Best practices
- Limit header items - 3-5 items keeps navigation clean
- One primary action - Use one prominent button (like Submit Listing or Contact)
- Clear labels - "Browse Listings" beats "Browse"
- Test mobile - Preview on a phone to check the mobile menu
- Logical order - Put most important items first (or last, for buttons)

Troubleshooting
Submit Listing option is greyed out
The Submit Listing feature is disabled. Go to Submit Listing in your directory settings and enable it.
Contact form not sending emails
Check that your account email is verified. Submissions go to your primary account email address.
Buttons not showing on the site
For Submit Listing buttons, verify the feature is enabled. Also check that you've saved your menu changes.
Menu looks crowded
Reduce the number of items or use dropdowns to group related links. The hamburger menu appears automatically when you have more than 4 items.
